Forgive these simplistic questions. What is the differrence between a 5000 and a 406? Is it just the copper box oor are there mre bells and whistles? or suitability for special markets? Can I use an HD converter? and, if so, which would you suggest for the American market? Ditto for XM/Serius?

MX5000 is Mcintosh current flagship model. It runs on a dual 24-bit dac, slightly more premium internals, a bigger power supply, copper chassis etc. Coupled with the optional external dac MDA5000, it’s a truly high-end deck.

MX406 is still a high-end unit and it runs on dual 20-bit burr brown, very analogue sounding (but not as analogue as the MX4000/MDA4000 combo) but has less resolution/detail than the higher models.
